From your perspective as an agency leader, what are the biggest operational pain points holding real estate businesses back today?

Most agencies don’t have a revenue problem. They have a systems and discipline problem.

The biggest operational pain points I see are:

  • Fragmented tech stacks increase friction points instead of streamlining operations
  • Inconsistent prospecting and follow-up habits; Lead generation is simple; agents struggle with the follow-up
  • Poor data hygiene means not giving data the importance and value it deserves. It's always 'I'll get to it later'
  • Poor cashflow management & financial discipline. They don't understand the three profit centres of a real estate business
  • Trying to do everything and not understanding how 'outsourcing' essential services to streamline, leverage and have the ability to scale their business

What changes do you think the real estate industry has been slow to embrace, and what will agencies that adapt early do differently over the next 3–5 years?

The industry has been slow to embrace three things:

  1. True data-led decision making; allowing 'mathematics to be your business manager'
  2. Personal brand over corporate brand
  3. Automation of non-dollar-productive tasks

Over the next 3–5 years, agencies that win will:

  • Treat appraisals and pipeline sellers like assets, not afterthoughts
  • Invest heavily in agent-level brand visibility
  • Systemise follow-up instead of relying on memory
  • Build lean operations with high margin models; Cash and profit are king

The future belongs to structured operators, not just charismatic salespeople.

How do high-performing agencies balance growth with compliance, quality control, and team wellbeing, especially in tighter market conditions?

The best businesses remove emotion from operations.

They:

  • Centralise compliance instead of leaving it to chance
  • Invest in trust accounting and bookkeeping discipline
  • Build clear reporting rhythms
  • Create leadership frameworks that protect culture

Growth without structure creates stress. Structure without growth creates stagnation. The balance is in cadence: daily huddles, weekly check-ins, clear KPIs, and removing unnecessary complexity.

You’ve been a strong advocate of RealtyAssist for some time now. We would love to know what specifically makes the partnership work so well for your agency and, in your experience, why don’t other providers come close?

What works is alignment. RealtyAssist understands the commercial reality of running an agency. It’s not just a product; it’s a partnership that integrates into the operational flow.

For us, the difference has been:

  • Responsiveness
  • Consistency
  • A practical understanding of how our business operates and the people within it
  • It's human! With all the 'tech' and  'platforms' that are available, it's refreshing that no one hides behind the technology, and you can pick up the phone and talk to the team

If you had the opportunity to start again and lead the same journey, what advice would you give your younger self about maintaining balance in life and choosing the people you surround yourself with?

Choose people carefully. Over the last 20 years of real estate business, if there is one thing that stands true, it is our mantra we live by, 'We do great work with great people.'

That type of energy transfer and the people you choose to work with will directly reflect your success. Think bigger and go faster (much faster!) - we often place our own ceiling or have limiting beliefs about how big and how fast you can grow a business.

Think with the end in mind - more importantly, 'burn the bridge' and make the decision that you will be in this business for the rest of your life and then design it to fit the lifestyle you want, including health, relationships and balance.

'Work and Play ' must merge into one - and once that happens, everything falls into place.
